Sewer Collection System Maintenance
We maintain the citywide sanitary sewer and storm drain collection system. This is accomplished through three basic programs.
- Zone maintenance–the cleaning of the sewer collection system using vacuum jet rodder trucks.
- Television camera inspection of new and old pipelines.
- Regular interval maintenance–cleaning and checking of known problem areas. New development and construction projects are reviewed for acceptance, while older sections are reviewed for repairs which are eventually contracted out.
This section also plays an important role in meeting Sanitary Sewer Management Plan goals and objectives.
Please call us immediately if you observe overflowing manholes, sewer line or storm drain back-ups/obstructions, or missing manhole covers or storm drain grates.
Sewer Laterals
The property owner owns and is responsible for maintaining the entire sewer lateral from the plumbing in the property owner’s buildings, up to and including the connection to the sewer main in the street. If there is a clog in the sewer lateral, it is the property owner’s responsibility to clear it. City crews are not allowed onto private property in order to clean or maintain privately owned sewer laterals. (CMC 15.36.235)
Sanitary Sewer Management Plan
The City of Chico Sanitary System Management Plan (SSMP) has been prepared in compliance with requirements of the State Water Resources Control Board Order No. 2006-0003 adopted May 2, 2006 which requires all public wastewater collection system agencies in California with greater than one mile of sewers to be regulated under General Waste Discharge Requirements. The SSMP is a compilation of the policies, procedures, and activities that are included in the planning, management, operation, and maintenance of the City’s sanitary sewer system. The Appendix D of the SSMP is the Sanitary Sewer Overflow Response Plan.
