In July 2021, the Chico Police Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) program, commonly known as drones, was implemented.

The department currently has ten pilots who hold a commercial drone, Part 107 license, issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.  Chico PD currently has 13 drones ranging from small “micros” to our largest platform, the “Matrice 30”.  Our Mavic Enterprise Advanced drones along with the M-30’s have a thermal camera that allows officers to track activity more effectively in the dark. 

The department’s UAS policy is comprehensive and prevents the use of drones from viewing private property without an order from a judge.

 

Aerial visibility and intelligence enhances de-escalation by providing officers with critical real-time information to formulate plans and tactics as they respond to emergencies.  Drones keep responding officers safe, improve resource allocation, and provide better, faster situation assessment.
