Yard Waste Recycling
To make it convenient to recycle your yard waste, the City of Chico established a curbside yard waste recycling program. This program is available through your garbage service provider for an additional monthly fee.
Lawn clippings, leaves, weeds, prunings and other yard waste make up about a third of the waste taken to the landfill each day. To protect groundwater and the environment, landfills are designed and operated to limit the flow of air, light and water. Without these elements, normal decomposition of yard waste does not take place. Additionally, state law requires cities and counties to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills.
For these reasons, it makes sense to divert yard waste from the landfill by taking it to a facility where it can be recycled into a nutrient-rich compost.
If you choose to participate in the City’s recycling program, you will receive an additional container for recycling your yard waste conveniently at the curb. Place your material into the container so that the lid will close. Because your yard waste will be recycled into useful compost, it is important that the material be kept clean. Please do not use plastic bags or put kitchen waste, paper, or other household trash into the yard waste container.
Your yard waste container will be collected every week on the same day that your regular garbage collection service day. For more information and monthly rates for this program, contact North Valley Waste Management at (530) 893-4777, or Recology Butte Colusa County at (530) 342-4444.
