On December 20th, 2021 at about 5:22pm, Chico Police Dispatch received several 911 calls regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian collision on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway at Silver Dollar Way. Officers arrived on scene as the pedestrian was still laying in the roadway. Officers spoke with witnesses who said the pedestrian was crossing MKL Jr. Pkwy w/b and was struck by a southbound vehicle. The driver of the car stopped and remained on scene to provide a statement to officers. Due to the severity of the pedestrian’s injuries, the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) was called in. Investigators determined the pedestrian was crossing outside the unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by the car. The driver of the car was a 34-year-old man from Oroville and the pedestrian was a 58-year-old man from Chico. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. At the time of this press release, investigators learned the pedestrian suffered a fractured neck, complained of back pain, had deformity on his right extremities, and was heavily intoxicated. No charges will be filed against the driver of the car. The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated.
