Since this incident occurred, the Chico Police Department Detective Bureau has been conducting a lengthy investigation. During this investigation, we located surveillance video in the area that captured the vehicle that the suspect was driving. At 0843 hours, which is a few hours after the shooting occurred, we received a report of a subject who had shot themself in an alleyway in the south part of Chico. Officer responded to the area and located a deceased subject. Evidence at that scene, made it appear to be a suicide. Also located at that scene, was the suspect vehicle that was captured on surveillance video from the City Plaza shooting. Property located inside the vehicle confirmed that the deceased subject had been driving the vehicle.
Detectives are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting at the City Plaza but believe the two incidents are connected. This investigation is still on-going, and we will not disclose the identity of the deceased subject until our investigation is completed. However, it should be noted that the deceased subject was not a Chico resident, and may have recently arrived from a neighboring state.
The victim of the shooting was treated for a gunshot wound and has already been released from the hospital.
