Unprovoked Stabbing in Downtown Chico Motel

On 8/8/22 at approximately 10:00 AM, Chico Police Officers were dispatched to the 700 Block of Broadway Street. Dispatch reported that a male subject in possession of a firearm was chasing a subject. Dispatch also stated that the suspect had stabbed that person. Officers responded to the area and located the victim and assisted in providing medical aid. The suspect was believed to be in a nearby motel room. Officers created a perimeter and began requesting that all occupants of the motel shelter in place. Approximately 16 minutes after Officers were dispatched to the area, a male emerged from the room with his hands up. The subject was compliant with Officers’ instructions and was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as Jeremy Brooks (48 years old). Brooks was found to be in possession of multiple knives on his person. Detectives later searched the motel room he emerged from and discovered a sawed-off shotgun, as well as multiple bags of methamphetamine and fentanyl. Officers interviewed the victim at a nearby hospital. The victim reported hearing a knock at his motel room door. When he answered the door, a male subject pointed a shotgun at him and forced his way into the room. The subject demanded that the victim smoke some methamphetamine. When the victim refused, Brooks stabbed the victim multiple times. The victim was able to escape from the room as Brooks pursued him. Detectives are still investigating the motive for this heinous attack.

Brooks was arrested and booked for the following crimes: 245 PC (Assault with a Deadly Weapon), 207 PC (Kidnapping), 459 PC (Burglary), 29800(a)(1) PC (Felon in Possession of a Firearm), 30305(a)(1) PC (Felon in Possession of a Firearm), 11378(a) PC (Possession for Sales of Methamphetamine), 417 (A)(2) PC (Brandishing a Firearm), and 11350(a) PC (Possession of a Controlled Substance). Brooks is a convicted felon with a violent history that includes carjacking. He has previous arrests for being a felon in possession of ammunition. Brooks was later transported to Butte County Jail.
