This evening at about 8:00 p.m. the Chico Police Dispatch Center received a call for service in the 100 block of W. East Ave regarding a suspicious package placed near the entrance to a retail business.
Officers arrived on scene and agreed the device appeared suspicious and determined it was unsafe to further inspect the device without additional equipment and training. The officers cordoned off the area and asked businesses in the area to evacuate. The Butte County Inter-Agency Bomb Squad was called to the scene to assist.
The Bomb Squad was able to confirm the device was not explosive nor a threat to the community. The device was collected, and the investigation is ongoing. Please notify the police department at (530)897-4900 if you have any information about who was responsible for placing this item in a public area.
The police department would like to express gratitude to the businesses that complied with the evacuation, making it easier for police personnel to investigate and render the situation safe.
