Suspicious Circumstances

On 10/19/2020, at about 7:57 pm, the Chico Police Department received a 911 call about an attempted kidnapping.  The reporting party just sat in her vehicle which was parked in the Hobby Lobby parking at 1919 E. 20^th Street, Chico.  An unknown male subject opened the passenger side door of the vehicle.  The subject reached into the car and saw an 11-year old child seated in the front passenger seat.  The subject looked up surprised when he saw the reporting party and said, “Oh sorry wrong car.”  The subject walked out of the parking lot. 

The subject walked to the AM/PM parking lot at 2000 Business Lane. The reporting party followed the subject to the parking lot to notify dispatch of his location.  A second subject was at AMP/PM and attempted to speak with the reporting party. She ignored him, leaving her windows and doors locked.  The subject who attempted to enter the reporting party’s vehicle, walked next door to the Red Lobster parking lot.  The reporting party said he got into the passenger side door of a white Suburban.  This was the same vehicle make and color as the reporting party’s vehicle. The reporting party was unable to see the license plate of the vehicle.   Officers were dispatched to the scene and arrived within one minute.  Several officers canvassed the area and contacted all matching vehicles.  Several vehicles and subjects were contacted but the subject in question was not located. 

It should be noted the original details broadcast over the police radio stated the subject attempted to take the reporting party’s child.  It was determined the subject did not touch the child and immediately walked away from the vehicle after he saw it was occupied.  Officers obtained surveillance footage from area businesses and are continuing to investigate the incident.  

We’d like to remind the community to stay vigilant and report all suspicious activity to the Chico Police Department.  Please note the suspects and vehicle description below.  We are asking the community for help in identifying the subjects in question.  Please reference CPD case #20-005743.

Suspect 1: (passenger) White male, black t-shit, khaki shorts, black shoes, brown hair.   

Suspect 2: (driver) White male, bald, black t-shirt, jeans, black shoes, white sunglasses.  

Suspect vehicle: White Chevy Suburban, unknown license plate.
