Suspect Arrested in Attempted Stabbing

On 09/30/2022 at 7:36 PM, Chico Police Department Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), were conducting routine duties and patrol support at the Friday Night Concert located in the City Plaza. One of the volunteers was contacted by a citizen who claimed an unknown male subject attempted to stab him while interrupting a potential bicycle theft at Jack In The Box located at 500 Broadway Street. Given the proximity of the concert in the City Plaza and the large group of community members in attendance, multiple patrol officers responded to the scene to search for the suspect

An observant officer saw a subject matching the description of the suspect and quickly detained him. The subject was identified as Bernie Valencia (44). During investigative efforts, it was determined Valencia was the suspect involved in the attempted stabbing. Luckily no one was hurt or injured during this act of violence. Valencia was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon 245(a)(1) PC, and possession of a concealed knife 21310 PC. Valencia was transported to the Butte County Jail for the above-listed charges.
