Suicidal Subject Rescued

Case# 20-004162

Post

On August 4th, 2020, at 9:23 AM the Chico Police Department received a report that a suicidal male had slit his wrists and was hanging over the bridge located in the 1000 block of Main Street, Chico. Chico Police Officers and Butte EMS Medics arrived at the bridge and observed a 47-year old male cutting his wrists and suffering from exsanguination while lying upon a small ledge beyond the bridge railing. The bridge spanned Little Chico Creek, which was dry and rocky, approximately 20 feet below the landing. Officers spoke with the subject, trying to convince him to climb back over the railing and receive medical aid. The subject was precariously slumped near the edge of the bridge and appeared prepared to fall to the creek bed below. One of the negotiating officers, tethered to a support officer, climbed over the bridge railing, grabbed the subject by his belt, allowing additional officers and paramedic staff to pull the subject over the railing and render life-saving aid.
