Subject Arrested for Driving Under the Influence and Possession of Stolen Mail

Case# 21-001935

On 3/31/2021 at approximately 0820 hours, Chico Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Burnt Ranch Way for a report of a subject unconscious while sitting in the driver seat of a running vehicle. Officers arrived and contacted Eric Rehse. Rehse was verbally uncooperative but eventually agreed to exit the vehicle and speak with Officers. Due to his objective symptoms of being under the influence of an unknown substance, Officers performed a series of field sobriety tests on Rehse. Rehse was eventually arrested for suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance while operating a motor vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle located hundreds of pieces of mail not belonging to Rehse. A set of “shaved” keys and a lock pick set were also located inside the vehicle. These items are used to gain entry into locked mailboxes without the proper key. The stolen mail was returned to the United States Post Office to be re-delivered to its rightful owner. Rehse was arrested and transported to Butte County Jail.

Rehse was arrested and charged with the following:
23152(f) CVC – Operating a motor vehicle under the Influence of a Controlled Substance

466 PC – Possession of Burglary Tools
