On January 23, Chico Police Officers from the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) were called in to take over a single-vehicle collision investigation. The driver of the vehicle was taken by ambulance to a local hospital but, unfortunately, did not survive the collision. The driver was positively identified as Jessup Lal, a 61-year-old Chico resident. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and will likely have to wait until the autopsy is complete to determine the reason for the crash. Chico Police would like to thank the citizens that came to Lal’s aid immediately following the collision and stayed with him until medical personnel arrived. At about 5:30 p.m. this evening, the Chico Police Department received a call for service related to a single vehicle collision on E. 5th Ave near the SR99 overpass. Chico Police, Fire, and Butte EMS medics arrived on scene. They located and treated the sole occupant of the vehicle who had suffered serious injuries. The driver was transported to a local hospital treatment. His medical status remains critical at the time of this press release.
The cause of the collision has not yet been established, and the investigation is ongoing.
