On March 5th, 2022, at about 3:00 p.m., a subject called into the Chico Police Department dispatch center to advise a possible vehicle accident had occurred near the intersection of W. 5th Street and Oak Street. Chico Police Officers arrived on scene and determined there was no vehicle accident. The officers spoke with people on scene and determined a subject had jumped on top of a parked vehicle near the intersection of W. 5th Street and Cedar Street. As a result, the vehicle received minor damage to its hood.
Officers attempted to speak with the two involved subjects, Edgar Reyes and Alejandro Salgado both of Chico, in a nearby parking lot regarding the vandalism. When Salgado was contacted by the two officers, he presented obvious signs of being under the influence of alcohol. While the officers were attempting to detain Salgado, Edgar confronted both officers and was verbally hostile. Edgar was repeatedly told to leave the scene by both officers and was informed he was interfering with an active investigation/arrest. Edgar refused to comply with the officers’ orders and continued to interfere with the arrest.
Both officers then attempted to detain Edgar for interfering and delaying in the investigation/arrest. When this occurred, Edgar began to physically resist both officers. As Edgar continued to physically resist both officers, he was able to rip a portion of the portable radio from one of the officer’s uniform. The officers were able to take Edgar to the ground in an attempt to detain him, but he continued to violently resist both officers. A Taser was also deployed on Edgar. Additional officers arrived on scene and Edgar and Salgado were both finally placed in handcuffs. Two additional subjects, Juan and Aristeo Reyes, were also arrested after the incident for obstructing and delaying officers during the arrest of Edgar.
One of the Chico Police Officers sustained minor injuries to their head and hand during the assault. The officer was able to self-transport to a local hospital, where they received treatment. The officer was released later that evening.
Edgar was medically cleared for incarceration. He was placed under arrest for 243(b) PC-Battery on a Police Officer Causing Injury, 69 PC-Resisting an Executive Officer and 647(f), Public Intoxication.
Juan was placed under arrest for 148(a)(1) PC, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer and 11350 H&S, Possession of Narcotics.
Aristeo was placed under arrest for 148(a)(1) PC, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer.
All three were booked into the Butte County Jail.
Due to his level of intoxication, Salgado was cited for 594 PC, Vandalism, and released to a local hospital for medical treatment.
