Murder Suspect Arrested During Shooting Investigation

On August 5th 2023, at 4:28 a.m., The Chico Police Dispatch Center received a call of a shooting which had occurred on the 1400 block of W. 3rd Street. Officers arrived in the area and began an area check and investigation into the incident. Officers learned there had been a gathering at a residence on that block. At some point during the gathering, a dispute occurred. A male subject from the gathering brandished a firearm and began to fire rounds from a handgun. As officers were arriving, a call came in from Enloe Hospital reporting two gunshot victims in the Emergency Room. Several people were contacted and detained who had been inside the residence where the shooting occurred. An Unmanned Aerial System was deployed inside the residence to confirm there were no victims or suspects inside. A man was found to be hiding under a bed in the residence by a team of officers and was detained. That subject provided a false name to officers and was placed under arrest for false ID as well as drug possession. A thorough investigation by CPD jail staff into the true identity of the subject arrested led detectives to the name Jayquan Miguel Sanchez and to a crime of Murder committed one year ago in Reading, Pennsylvania. After speaking with investigators from Reading, PA, VSU Detectives were able to positively identify the subject CPD arrested as the same Sanchez investigators had been seeking for over a year. Sanchez was transported to Butte County Jail for future extradition to Pennsylvania.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is continuing. Both victims were admitted to Enloe Medical Center with moderate gunshot injury to their extremities and are expected to survive.
