Homicide **UPDATE** 9-17-21

On September 4, 2021, at 2:28 AM, the Chico Police Department began receiving 911 calls of a shooting which had just occurred at a homeless encampment at Teichert Pond in South Chico. Within three minutes, officers arrived in the area. They located two gunshot victims on the north side of the pond. One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the lower extremity and was transported to Enloe Medical Center for treatment. He is currently in stable condition. A second victim was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Medics arrived on scene and began lifesaving measures on the second victim, unsuccessfully. The second victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The decedent in this case has been identified as Guy Steven Vanzant (53) of Chico, CA. This is an ongoing investigation. No further information will be released at this time. During the early morning hours, CPD detectives and officers along with the assistance of BINTF and Fish and Wildlife K9 units, arrested a 16-year old-juvenile for the murder of Guy Steven Vanzant. The juvenile was contacted at his Chico residence and taken into custody without incident. The juvenile was sent to Butte County Juvenile Hall for the requested charges of murder, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon (firearm).
