The decedent in this case has been identified as Guy Steven Vanzant (53) of Chico, CA. This is an ongoing investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

Chico, CA – On September 4, 2021, at 2:28 AM, the Chico Police Department began receiving 911 calls of a shooting which had just occurred at a homeless encampment at Teichert Pond in South Chico. Within three minutes, officers arrived in the area. They located two gunshot victims on the north side of the pond. One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the lower extremity and was transported to Enloe Medical Center for treatment. He is currently in stable condition. A second victim was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Medics arrived on scene and began lifesaving measures on the second victim, unsuccessfully. The second victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This is an ongoing investigation. The identities of the victims will not be released at this time.
