Heard Gunshots

Case # 23-007180

Post

On October 23rd at about 4 p.m. the Chico Police Dispatch Center had multiple callers reportedly hearing gunshots in the 100 block of W. 10th Ave. Officers arrived in the area and spoke with witnesses. There were no reports of arguments, or a disturbance and no victims or bullet strikes were located.

Witnesses identified an apartment building near W. 10th Ave and Magnolia Ave as being the likely location from where the gunshot sounds had generated. Officers contacted occupants of the apartment building via a public address speaker. The occupants allowed officers to check the interior of their apartments for potential victims of a shooting.

Members of the Chico Police Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Team flew a drone through the apartments. No victims or evidence of a shooting were located inside.

Fragmented ammunition was discovered near the apartment building. It appears someone recently ignited the ammunition while it was outside of a firearm causing the bullet casing to be damaged without sending a projectile from its point of ignition. It is unknown if the ignition of this ammunition was what witnesses heard.

Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to call the Chico Police Department at (530)897- 4911 and reference case number 23-007180.
