Evading, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Hit & Run and Resisting Arrest

Case#: 20-000293

Post

Chico, CA- On January 14, 2020, at about 12:59 p.m. Home Depot loss prevention phoned Chico PD about a subject (later identified as Robert Anthony Garcia, Jr.) in their store who had a warrant for their arrest.  Home Depot staff followed Garcia outside and watched him drive away in a blue 2002 GMC Truck.  The truck had been reported stolen out of Oroville, CA.  The truck was last seen driving west bound on Skyway.

At about 1:15 pm a Chico PD officer saw the stolen truck driving north bound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.  The truck turned west bound onto E. 20th Street and officers attempted to conduct a high risk traffic stop.  The vehicle began driving erratically.  Out of concern for the safety of the community officers chose not to chase the truck.  Garcia was last seen turning onto north bound Park Avenue.

At about 1:24 pm an officer spotted the stolen truck on north bound Esplanade near Cohasset Road.  The truck had a flat tire and heavy front end damage. Garcia saw the officer and began driving erratically.  The truck became disabled in the middle of the East Avenue and Esplanade intersection. Garcia immediately jumped out of the truck and ran from the scene.  The officer gave chase and Garcia surrendered in front of Little Caesar’s Pizza, 118 W. East Avenue.

After detaining Garcia, officers learned he had also caused a hit and run collision on the east side drive of Esplanade at E. 1st Avenue.  Without any officers anywhere near him, Garcia had run a stop sign and collided with a Toyota 4-runner broadside.  Thankfully the two occupants of the 4-runner were uninjured.

Garcia admitted to fleeing from officers and said he had consumed a quarter ounce of methamphetamine today.  Garcia was currently on parole for assault with a deadly weapon.  Garcia had a felony warrant for his arrest in the parole case.  He was booked into the Butte County Jail for violations of 2800.2(a) VC – Evading of Peace Officer, 10851(a) VC – Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, 20002(a) VC – Hit and Run, and 148(a)(1) PC, Resisting Arrest.
