DUI Collision / Child Endangerment

On Tuesday June 1st, 2021 at about 1200 hours, several 911 calls came into the Chico Police Dispatch center regarding a collision that occurred near East Avenue and North Avenue. Callers said there were 3 vehicles involved and 1 vehicle was badly damaged. Officers arrived on scene and found one vehicle with its right-side tires/wheels sheered off.
Through the investigation, Officers learned that one of the drivers was DUI. Daniel Cardinal side-swiped two vehicles and struck a tree. Cardinal struck the tree with the right side of his vehicle which sheered its right side tires off and forced the vehicle back out into the roadway spinning. Several revolutions were made before the vehicle came to a stop nearly ½ block away. Cardinal and another driver were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The other driver was treated and released. The third driver was uninjured. Officers learned that Cardinal had his teenaged child in the car with him when the collision occurred. The teenager was not injured. Cardinal was medically cleared from the hospital and placed under arrest for driving intoxicated and child endangerment. Cardinal was later transported to Butte County Jail with a bail of $125,000.

The 1000 block of East Avenue was closed for just over an hour while the scene was processed and cleaned up.
