The Chico Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on the evening of Memorial Day, Monday May 30th , 2022. The checkpoint was located in the 200 block of East Ave for westbound traffic. The checkpoint was open from 8 P.M. to Midnight. During that 4-hour period, 564 vehicles came through the checkpoint. 27 of those drivers came through who did not have their license in possession. Officers verified their license status and 5 drivers returned unlicensed and 6 drivers came back suspended. Those 11 drivers were given citations and a licensed driver was called to the scene to drive the vehicle away. One subject was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and another subject was arrested for possession of a concealed weapon, a handgun laying on the floorboard. There were no arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.
DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests.
Those caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be approximately $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses, not to mention possible jail time.
Chico PD reminds drivers that impaired driving does not only involve alcohol. Marijuana also impairs one’s ability to drive safely and can also land you in custody for DUI. Additionally, some prescription medications can impair your ability to drive safely. Always check the medication label to see if it warns you of driving or operating machinery.
Chico PD will be conducting more DUI saturation patrols during the month of June and another DUI/CDL checkpoint near the end of the month. We are committed in keeping our streets safe for all those traveling.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Highway Patrol.
Supervisor: Sgt. Todd Lefkowitz
Watch Commander: Lt. Ben Love
