On Sunday 1/23/22 the Chico Police Department responded to a North Chico neighborhood after several residents reported receiving anti-Semitic flyers. Officers responded to the area and confirmed that these flyers were distributed across several streets. Based on the information and facts gathered thus far, it appears that this is a general distribution of hate material and not a directed effort against any one specific person. We believe the flyers were distributed in the early morning hours on Sunday 1/23, in the areas bordering Silverbell Rd., Godman Ave., and Waterford Rd.
We understand that these hate incidents are attacks, not only against one group, but against our whole community. We are aware of recent events in Texas and heightened sensitivity for our Jewish community members. The Chico Police Department is dedicated to ensuring our community is a safe place for all persons. We will be continuing our investigative efforts and working with state partners to attempt to identify those responsible and assess for criminal action. We will be increasing patrols in the areas affected and will be following up with our Jewish community partners in the days to come.
Fighting hate is a community effort. We promise to do our part. We ask that you help us. Attached are informational fact sheets and brochures produced by the California Department of Justice, that outline information on hate crimes and hate incidents, resources for victims and actions we can all take to protect one another.
We ask residents in the area to check their surveillance systems for activity consistent with distribution of flyers. Anyone with information regarding this specific incident is asked to reach out to the Chico Police Department and reference case #22-000466.
