Death in a Public Right of Way
Case # 23-001024
On February 18, 2023, at approximately 1:45 PM, Chico Fire Engine 1 was flagged down in the area of E. 4th St. and Orient St. by a male reporting party stating his girlfriend was not breathing. Fire personnel located the victim in a nearby alley where she and the reporting party had slept for the night. Fire personnel checked on the victim and found that she was deceased.
Chico Police responded to the location and contacted the reporting party. The reporting party told Officers that he and the deceased had been consuming alcohol most of the day and then fentanyl prior to going to sleep in an alley around 1700 hours. The reporting party stated he woke around 0130 hours, found the victim not breathing, and went to summon help.
Chico Police processed the scene, then contacted the Butte County Sheriff/Corner’s Office. The coroner responded and removed the deceased.
The official cause of death will be determined at a later date and time.
