On 01-19-2020 at approximately 0400 hours, CPD officers were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at the Seven Eleven, 1111 Forest Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and learned an unidentified suspect had fled from the business on a bike prior to officers arriving on scene.
During the investigation, it was learned the unidentified suspect had made criminal threats toward an employee working at the business. The employee also observed a knife in the suspect’s possession that was partially concealed during the incident. It was also determined that no actual robbery had occurred while the suspect was inside the business. Officers began checking the surrounding areas for the suspect.
Officers located a subject who matched the description near the corner of E. 20th St. and Notre Dame Blvd. The subject, later identified as Michael Gardenhire, age 22 of Chico, was detained without further incident. Gardenhire was positively identified as the suspect by a business employee. At the time of the arrest, Gardenhire was in possession of a fixed blade knife, a fictitious firearm and loaded semi-automatic handgun. Gardenhire was placed under arrest for Criminal Threats, Possession of a Loaded Firearm and Possession of a Dirk/Dagger. Gardenhire was ultimately transported to the Butte County Jail.
