Chico PD Statement on the Gelayo Incident

The Chico Police Department would like to address concerns from the community surrounding the incident at Gelayo involving juveniles. We want to assure the community we responded to Gelayo on the day of the incident and started an investigation into the matter. We have already spoken with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office concerning the details of the case and the possibility of a potential hate crime having occurred. At this point in the investigation, we are attempting to identify the juveniles involved. However, it should be noted we are prevented from posting photos of the involved juveniles to any media outlet due to laws surrounding the release of information concerning juveniles involved in crimes. We take these matters seriously and ask the community to allow the investigation to run its course through the justice system. We are also asking any witnesses who may know the juveniles involved in this incident to please call Chico Police at 530-897-4911. Thank you for your understanding and assistance as we want Chico to be a safe community to live, work, and recreate for all citizens.
