Carjacking and Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Case # 23-006190

Post

On September 15, 2023, at approximately 9:55 PM, Chico Police Dispatch received a call from a subject near the intersection of Whitewood Way and Mariposa Avenue stating he had been stabbed and his vehicle had been stolen. Chico Police Officers responded to the scene and located a male subject suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen. Several Chico Police Officers circulated in the area of the incident in an attempt to locate the vehicle and suspects. The victim was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Chico Police Officer in the area was able to locate the stolen vehicle near the intersection of E. Eaton Road and Mariposa Avenue. The officer attempted to conduct a high-risk vehicle enforcement stop at this location. The suspect vehicle fled from the officer and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The pursuit continued on various streets on the north end of Chico before leaving the city limits and continuing northbound on State Route 99. The pursuit continued through unincorporated areas of Butte County, north of the City of Chico. Chico Officers were assisted by members of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol.

Chico Police Officers were able to deploy spike strips to try and stop or slow the suspect vehicle. Spike Strips are a device used by CPD officers to flatten the tires of a pursued vehicle. This greatly reduces the danger of vehicle pursuits by limiting the suspect’s ability to continue to drive fast. The spike strips often disable the vehicle’s ability to move forward at all. The deployment of the spike strips was successful and the suspect vehicle came to a stop less than a quarter mile from where they were deployed.

The driver and passenger, both identified as juveniles, were contacted by CPD officers and taken into custody without incident. Both juveniles were placed under arrest for a variety of charges, including Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Stolen Vehicle Possession and Evading Officers. Both were transported to Butte County Juvenile Hall. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
