Big 5 Burglary

*UPDATE*
Investigating officers identified Chico resident ISRAEL
GALLARDO-CONTRERAS (35) as the suspect in the burglary. At
approximately 2:30 AM, following a brief pursuit, the vehicle
used in the burglary was located in the area of Wisconsin Street,
Chico. GALLARDO-CONTRERAS evaded capture at that time.
At approximately 8:30 AM, a Chico Police Department officer
located GALLARDO-CONTRERAS riding a bicycle in the area of W.
23rd Street and Mulberry Street.
GALLARDO-CONTRERAS attempted to flee on bicycle and by foot.
GALLARDO-CONTRERAS was combative during his arrest and was
apprehended after a brief struggle. GALLARDO-CONTRERAS exhibited
signs and symptoms consistent with being under the influence of a
central nervous system stimulant (presumptively characteristic of
methamphetamine).
GALLARDO-CONTRERAS, a previously convicted felon, was arrested
for the following charges:
Forced Commercial Burglary – Penal Code 459
Felon in Possession of a Firearm – Penal Code 29800(a)(1)
Resisting Arrest – Penal Code 148(a)(1)

PRESS RELEASE
On June 30, 2020, at 0047 hours, Chico Police Officers were
dispatched to Big 5 Sporting Goods located at 1717 Mangrove Ave.
for a reported alarm. When officers arrived, they saw damage to
the front of the business as if a vehicle had crashed into doors.
Once officers were inside the business, no one was located. Once
staff arrived, it was confirmed items were stolen from the
business. The investigation is ongoing.
