On April 15th, 2023, at 6:15 a.m., The Chico Police Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a man yelling for help and saying someone was trying to hit him with their car on the Esplanade near E. Lassen Avenue. Officers responded to the area and located two men fighting on the Esplanade near East Avenue. Both were detained.
Through the investigation, officers learned that the victim was walking on the Esplanade south toward East Avenue when a white Ford Ranger began driving at him. The victim ran to get away, but the driver of the pickup continued to chase him through parking lots and across curbs and sidewalks. Via physical evidence, witness statements, and video surveillance, officers determined the suspect driving the pickup made several attempts to run over the victim with the vehicle. The suspect’s pickup became disabled when he collided with a parked vehicle in the parking lot of Great Harvest Bread on the Esplanade. The suspect then continued chasing the victim on foot to the location they were discovered and detained by Chico Police.
The suspect, identified as 49 year-old Daniel Clark, was arrested for 664/187 PC; Attempted Murder, based on the repetitive and egregious attempts to run over the victim with his vehicle. At this point, it appears the victim and suspect were unknown to each other. The motive for the crime is still under investigation.
