Arson Arrest
Case # 23-002345
On April 14th at 5 a.m., Chico Police Officers and Chico Fire responded to an address on the 1700 block of E. Eaton Road regarding a man in a mental health crisis. The man’s mother called CPD to report her son was suicidal and had kicked her out of their apartment. Officers also learned the man, identified as 24-year-old Devan Lee, had gasoline and a lighter and was threatening to set the home on fire with him inside. A short time later, Officers on scene observed a fire burning inside the apartment. The fire quickly spread through the home as officers evacuated residents from adjoining apartments.
Lee had barricaded the front door of the residence, making entry for Fire and Police difficult, but soon fled out the back of the apartment after inhaling smoke. Lee attempted to steal a car in an attempt to avoid apprehension but was quickly caught and detained by Officers. Once it was confirmed Lee had fled the residence, Chico Fire was able to quickly extinguish the flames.
Lee was transported to Enloe Medical Center for smoke inhalation but was soon released in good health. He was then placed under arrest for Arson of an inhabited dwelling.
The fire set by Lee caused significant damage to his mother’s apartment as well as smoke damage to adjoining apartments. Other than some minor smoke inhalation by Lee, there were no injuries.
