On September 7th, 2020, at approximately 4:30 AM, the Chico
Police Department received a report of arson that had occurred in
the Chico Mall, located in the 1900 block of E. 20th Street,
Chico. Chico Mall security personnel reported that an unknown
suspect had set fire to the large clothing donation trailer
located in the mall parking lot.
The Chico Police Department was provided with security camera recordings of the incident. The recordings captured images of a readily identifiable suspect wearing unique clothing. Damage to the donation facility and the items inside was preliminarily estimated to be $10,000 to $20,000.
At approximately 3:00 PM, Chico Mall security personnel contacted the Chico Police Department to report that a subject matching the suspect from the security recordings was walking in the Chico Mall parking lot. Chico Police officers arrived in the area and detained VANYA HUMMEL (24). HUMMEL was confirmed to be on felony probation through Siskiyou County for Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The investigating officer confirmed that HUMMEL was the arson suspect from the security camera recordings. Additional evidence was obtained during HUMMEL’S detention. HUMMEL was arrested for Arson, a violation of 451(d) of the California Penal Code.
