K9 Aron Finds Gun Hidden By Fleeing Felon
Case# 21-004830
On 8/10/21, at about 9:50 PM, a Chico Police Officer was in the area of Tractor Supply, 2400th block of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, when he saw a male he recognized as Basil POWERS. Powers, age 25, had a felony warrant for his arrest and ran from the officer. Several Chico Police officers responded to the area to search for POWERS. As an officer was southbound Hwy 99, POWERS was seen crossing the highway and was detained.
Fatal Collision
Case# 21-4787
On Sunday night, August 8th, 2021 at about 10:40pm, a Chico Police Officer was on patrol near Home Depot on Notre Dame Blvd. when he attempted to stop a motorcycle for having an unreadable license plate. The motorcycle slowed briefly, then accelerated rapidly in attempts to evade arrest. The motorcyclist was last seen crossing the Skyway traveling n/b on Notre Dame Blvd. The Officer did not pursue the reckless motorcycle due to risk to the public. The Officer stopped for the red light, then continued when the light turned green.
SCAM Attempt
On August 6th, 2021, the Chico Police Department was alerted to a scam attempt at a local business in Chico. The suspect called the business identifying themselves as a representative from the Chico Police Department. The suspect said the manager of the business was in custody and the employee of the business needed to send them money. Fortunately, the employee did not complete the transaction and no loss was incurred.
Homicide Investigation
Case# 21-004645
On August 1st, 2021 at approximately 3:50 pm, Chico Police officers responded to 11301 Midway (Comanche Creek) on a report of a stabbing. It was reported that two male subjects were involved in an altercation and one subject had been stabbed. Officers arrived on scene and located an unidentified male subject suffering from a stab wound to the chest. The victim was transported to Enloe Hospital where he ultimately died of his injuries. A male subject matching the description of the other involved party was located about a block away from the murder scene. He was detained by officers.
Wanted Felon Arrested After Stealing a Vehicle
Case# 21-004564
On 7/28/21, close to 3:00 PM, a Chico Police Officer was dispatched to a car that was just stolen in The South One Mile Park area. The victim informed the officer that as he was unloading items to enjoy the day in the park, he saw a female driving away in his vehicle. The victim called Chico Police and provided a description of the female and his vehicle. Once the officer contacted the victim, a full description of the vehicle and the suspect was given to the on-duty officers.
Fatal Collision
Case# 21-004475
On Sunday July 25th, 2021 at about 0703 hours, Chico Police were dispatched to a vehicle collision and explosion at the bridge in the 300 block of Nord Avenue. This location is where Nord Ave. and Walnut Street (S/R 32) meet. When Officers and emergency personnel arrived on scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Chico Fire Dept. quickly extinguished the fire. Inside the vehicle were the remains of a charred human. We were able to determine the driver was the only occupant inside the vehicle. Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team took over the investigation.
Armed Felon Arrested in Downtown Chico
Case#21-004468
On July 25, 2021, at about 12:00 a.m., Chico Police Officers were on patrol in downtown Chico. Officers responded to 222 Main Street on a report of a subject passed out in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle. Officers contacted the subject and identified him as Rogelio Miguel Martinez (30 years-old). Through investigation, officers determined Martinez was too intoxicated to care for his own safety. Officers arrested Martinez for public intoxication.
Felony DUI and Violation of Probation Arrest

On 7/25/21 at approximately 0051 hrs. CPD Dispatch received a report of a possibly intoxicated driver near the Downtown Chico area. The driver was reported to have nearly collided head-on with at least two separate vehicles being driven on the roadway. Officers responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop. The driver of the vehicle, Veronica Gonzalez, refused to stop for officers, and a brief slow speed pursuit ensued. Gonzalez eventually yielded her vehicle when she came to the Lower Bidwell Park entrance gate.
Report of Violence with a Gun
Case# 21-004446
On Saturday, 7/24/21 at approximately 9:01 AM the Chico Police Department received a report of shooting that had just occurred at an apartment residence in the 1300 block of Citrus Avenue, Chico. The victim reported the suspect, an unidentified black adult male, brandished a firearm and fired rounds at him. At the time of this press release, evidence indicative of the discharging of a firearm has not been located.
The Chico Police Department is requesting members of the public with additional information regarding the incident call (530) 897-4900 and reference case 21-4446.
Chico Animal Services – Bat Tests Positive for Rabies
A bat recently picked up by Chico Animal Control was found to be positive for Rabies. Bats are beneficial in that they eat a huge number of night-flying insects, including agricultural pests, making them a valuable part of our ecology. However, bats are also capable of carrying Rabies, and are the primary source of Rabies in Butte County. Rabies can infect all mammals, including humans. Because Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, it is important to prevent exposure, and if exposed receive anti-rabies treatment.
Chico PD Statement on the Gelayo Incident
Press Release
The Chico Police Department would like to address concerns from the community surrounding the incident at Gelayo involving juveniles. We want to assure the community we responded to Gelayo on the day of the incident and started an investigation into the matter. We have already spoken with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office concerning the details of the case and the possibility of a potential hate crime having occurred. At this point in the investigation, we are attempting to identify the juveniles involved.
Structure Fire
Case# 21-003958
On July 3, 2021, at 5:31 p.m., The Chico PD Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls of a structure fire behind a residence on the 100 block of W. 19th Street in Chico. Chico Fire responded and found a small structure behind the residence fully engulfed. The fire also began to spread to nearby vegetation. By 5:47 p.m., Chico Fire crews had the fire knocked down and began a search of the building. During the search, one person was located deceased inside the structure. Chico Fire Investigators along with the Chico Police Department conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Vehicle Fails to Brake and Breaks Gas Line
Case# 21-003814
On 6/26/21 at approximately 6:20 PM, Chico Police Officers were dispatched to Pine Tree Apartments, located on Emigrant Way, Chico CA. Dispatch received a report of a single vehicle that collided into an apartment, causing damage to a natural gas line.
Death in a Public Right of Way
Case# 21-003250
On 05/31/2021, at 12:05 pm, the Chico Police Department received a report of a possibly deceased person near Teichert Pond, 1499 Springfield Drive, Chico. Butte County EMS arrived at the scene and located a male subject in a tent, deceased. The identify of the deceased is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin. There were no obvious signs of criminality located.
Pursuit of Stolen Car Travels Through Chico
Chico, CA – On 05/29/2021, at approximately 1235 hours, The Chico Police Department became aware of members of the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office in pursuit of a stolen vehicle eastbound on State Highway 32 coming toward Chico. The pursuit traveled into west Chico from Highway 32, east to the Esplanade then into the Chico downtown area at a high rate of speed. The pursuit then traveled to the Chapmantown area where Glenn County deputies lost sight of the vehicle. The unoccupied vehicle was later located on Guill Street in Chico.
Anti-Vaping Billboard Contest
In April of 2021, The Chico Police Department School Resource Unit organized an Anti-Vaping Billboard Contest. The contest was a collaboration between the Chico Unified School District, The Chico Police Department and Stott Advertising in Chico. The contest was open to 5th grade students at each elementary school, all three unified middle schools and all three unified high schools. The contest was to bring awareness to vaping and the dangers it poses to students in the district. Students in the above categories were asked to draw anti-vaping art to display these dangers.
**UPDATE** Fatal Collision
Case# 21-2827
On May 11th, 2021 at about 8pm, Chico Police responded to a single vehicle collision at the west end of W. Eaton Rd. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle collide into a concrete K-rail road barrier at speeds between 80 and 100 mph. The K-rail had previously been placed there to prevent vehicular traffic. Officers arrived on scene, they discovered the single occupant was deceased. The Chico Police Major Accident Investigation Team was called in and took over the investigation.
Rollover Collision
Case# 2021-126-068
On Thursday May 6th, 2021 at about 0845 hours, several 911 calls came into the Chico Police Dispatch center regarding a rollover collision. The callers said two SUV’s collided at the intersection of 6th and Main Streets. Officers arrived on scene and saw that one of the vehicles had rolled over onto its roof. Both drivers were out of their vehicles and were not injured. The drivers were identified as a 73-year old female and a 43-year old male, both from Chico. The investigation revealed the 73-year old female ran the red light which caused the collision.
Willful Discharge of a Firearm in a Grossly Negligent Manner
Case# 21-002645
On 5-2-21 at approximately 10:47 pm, the Chico Police Department
Communication Center started receiving calls of a shooting in the
alleyway behind 515 Hickory Street. The reporting party observed
a male subject fire two shots at another male subject in the
alleyway. Both subjects fled the area just after the shooting
occurred.
Officers from the Chico Police Department responded to the scene
and searched for the involved parties; however, they were not
located. Officer contacted witnesses and canvased the area for
evidence. Officers did locate evidence that a shooting occurred.
Traffic Collision
Case# 21-002617
On 05/01/2021, around 9:22 AM, the Chico Police Department
received a report of a traffic collision at Cohasset Rd. and
Eaton Rd. The initial reports stated one driver had been ejected
from a vehicle during the collision. Medical personnel were
nearby and arrived on scene quickly.
The investigation revealed one vehicle was seen driving
recklessly south on Cohasset Rd. just prior to the accident.
Witnesses saw the vehicle enter the intersection at Eaton Rd.
against a red light and broadside a vehicle traveling east
through the intersection on Eaton Rd.
