City Temporarily Expands Outdoor Dining at Existing Food Establishments
Emergency order issued to allow food establishments to use their private space for outdoor dining. City also highlights process to use public space for outdoor dining.
Due to COVID-19 and Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent actions closing indoor dining at restaurants, the City of Chico has issued Emergency Order 2020-002 temporarily expanding outdoor dining at existing restaurants.
Public Safety
A message from the Chico Police Department:
Chico Police is still actively handling calls for service and responding to crimes in progress. Our communications center is asking the public to disclose any medical conditions when they call for police and fire services so that we can make sure First Responders have the appropriate personal protective equipment and to reduce any potential exposure.
Face coverings required in public spaces
Cloth face coverings help reduce the spread of COVID-19 especially when combined with physical distancing and frequent hand washing. Starting June 18, Californians must wear face coverings in common and public indoor spaces and outdoors when distancing is not possible.

Parklet installations begin!
The City of Chico continues looking for ways for local businesses to adjust to State closures.
The City of Chico is continuing our work helping local businesses adjust and adapt to the state’s closure of indoor dining. New safety barriers were yesterday for the creation of “parklets” - expanding outdoor dining areas for our downtown restaurants.
We’d like to thank both Knife River construction for donating and installing the k-rail barriers, and to Slater & Sons for donating water barriers to help keep diners safe. We’d also like to thank the Downtown Chico Business Association and their partnership with the City to help implement the parklet concept.
